The costs for the Internet connections and wireless equipment are paid for by the hotspot venues, or sponsors. There's no cost to users who want to use the network, and there are no ads on our community pages except those of the businesses offering the access.
To use the ZAP Québec network, you need any WiFi-compatible device (802.11-type), and you need to be at one of our hotspots (the list is here). The first time you use the network, you will have to create your user account. You will not need to recreate this account afterwards, even if you are in another ZAP hotspot.
A ZAP hotspot name always starts with ZAP, followed by the name of the business that offers free access.
Each user has a unique account so that we know how many people are using the network, to help prevent abuse, and to let users participate in the community projects that will spring up in the future.
Not anymore than any other Internet connection. If you're sending or receiving any data that you'd prefer others not see, you should use secure (encrypted) methods. Just like you would do when at home or at work.
In order to insure the project's evolution and also to make sure its mission is well served, it is necessary that all users read and understand the terms and conditions associated with the use of the ZAP Québec network.
No. It is important to realize that ZAP Québec is a network meant for people on the go, to give a way for people needing a fast and temporary connection to get some information from the Internet or stay in touch with their email when they are in public places.
It is not there to replace conventional home Internet connections. Use of the ZAP Québec network as the only connection from your home or office is not in line with the spirit of the community project we currently have going on. There's absolutely no reason for a store, restaurant or public institution to give residents a free Internet connection. In order to prevent this, we will monitor the network and people making anormal use of the network could have their account shut down.
Sooner if you can help us pitch them on the idea of ZAP Québec. Speak with them and give them information so they can contact us. Or even better, tell us about their interest and we will contact them.
